Definition of Sublimation

Sublimation Mug

Sublimation Printing is actually a very scientific process. Sublimation is the transition from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase. Sublimation printing allows you to transfer images onto a shirt or another surface where the ink goes directly from a solid into a gas and infuses into your project. The ink is actually infused or dyed into the fibers. Once the heat is removed the subset will close. The ink then goes back to a solid and is permanent. This process works best on white and light colors. Sublimation is an alternative to traditional inkjet technology, in that sublimation ink actually becomes part of the shirt or item you print on. Sublimation printing creates great quality that will not fade over time.

Sublimation on a mug is the basically same process. The magic happens once the image is heat pressed / printed onto the mug. This is when the ink turns to a gas state and is absorbed into the polyester coating on the surface of a sublimation mug. Besides printing sublimation allows an image that can be a photograph.

In conclusion, Sublimation is the process of printing with sublimation ink, on a sublimation transfer paper, using a sublimation printer and then applying heat using a heat press.
